You can always tell as it bounces up and does not close unless its done properly and you will hear a click sound.

I am totally in love with this eyeliner, it is so quick and easy to work with compared to other eyeliner pens. I no longer use my gel liners. I highly recommend this for beginners as it makes it very easy to apply any type of eyeliner. It makes eyeliner literally fool proof. It is also amazing to use if you want something quick and easy to use like me, the precision is just amazing.
